Will You Won’t You? was a performance work that appropriated movements from dressage, quadrille and cakewalk. The work takes as its reference point the 107 year old history of the Horse Show at Olympia and draws connections between military horseback quadrille, human quadrille and dressage. Obedience, control and display are explored in these and then put into question through the performance of cakewalk – a 19th century American plantation dance where slaves mocked (with approval) the grandiose mannerisms of their masters.
The dance steps are performed to a specially-mixed soundtrack. The performances comprise 3 cakewalks around the Art 14 Fair and a dance in the Fair’s performance space.
